Stability Test of Povidone-Iodine Solution

Abstract

|
Povidone-iodine (PVI) is used to prevent infection and treat wounds. There are four kinds of PVI solution; 10% PVI topical solution, 10% PVI vaginal douche, 7.5% PVI scrub and 0.75% PVI gargle. We studied the stability of previously opened bottles of each PVI solution. Firstly, we seperated four of them into two bottles each, Secondly, we stored one of each PVI solution bottles opened and the other unopened at room temperature. Thirdly, Specimens were collected immediately in all PVI solution bottles after opened. This collection was repeated every 7 day for 200 days. Then, we examed the stability (mesurement of pH value and determinations of aviailable iodine). There have been reports indication the presence of microbial contaminants in PVI solution. So we checked the microbial growth of gargle solution. The pH value and available iodine were stable for 200 days in topical solution, vaginal douche and scrub for both-opened and unopened condition. However in gargle solution, avaiable iodine were stable 50 days. Any microbial growth was not noted in gargle. Therefore, we can use PVI solution-topical solution, vaginal douche and scrub-until 6 months after opened and gargle soution can be used until 50 days.
